NOVEMBER -- Veteran Car Run

On Sunday 5 November, there is the Veteran Car Run. 1896 was a red-letter day in British motoring: the ‘Emancipation Run’ from London to Brighton (Madeira Drive) celebrates the passing of the Locomotives on the Highway Act. This raised the speed limit for ‘light locomotives’ from 4mph to 14mph and abolished the requirement to be preceded by a man on foot. The cars have an average speed of 20mph and the only reward for a successful run is a Finisher’s Medal (awarded to all who reach Brighton before 4.30pm).
